Difference between SMM and SMO

SMO(On Page Modifications):

  1. Social Media Optimization or SMO refers to the process of streamlining or optimizing a website so that it can be exposed online on various social media channels. This process can include anything carried out “on-page” such as refining the interface and usability of the site so that it becomes more compelling to the visitors in an effort to help them share it through various social media sites.
  2. SMO can be taken as a way to encourage SMM activities by visitors of your website..SMO is all about pulling your audience in with an “optimized” website and encouraging them to spread your content without any effort on your part.
  3. This includes providing sharing buttons on your page of popular social network sites such as facebook, twitter, linkedin, etc.making strategic change on website to encourage social media engagement or even brand identity on social media platforms.
  4. It creates online profiles via social media networks so that you can share the content you create on your website or blog
  5. It is a part of SMM


SMM(Off Page Modifications):

  1. SMM on the other hand is the next step to SMO.it focuses on promoting your business through content creation.  Its less of an engagement strategy and focuses more on driving traffic to your site/product.  SMM focuses more on using social networking sites to generate interest, views, sales and interaction with a company or its products and services.
  2. social media marketing is more about sharing or say "pushing" your content into audience and ultimately bringing them to your site. This let them know about site's existence i.e it intends to generate sales through social media.It refers to activities taking place outside your website (on some other channels)
  3. Advertisements, blogs, images, and videos describing your services and products
  4. Helps to generate leads upon on SMO work done on the Social Media
  5. It is a part of Internet/Digital marketing Strategy.



Conclusion: 

SEO and SMO are methods that you can implement yourself whereas SEM and SMM are methods which require paid advertisement and setting a budget. Although SEM and SMM will get you results fast, they are limited to the size of your budget. SEO and SMO are more long term solutions which, if done right, can continually bring in the desired results for your business. So which is right for you?
